Week beginning: 20th September, 2026.
‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts’ Isaiah 55:8-9
The readings today remind us that God’s ways are far greater than our ways. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the workers in the vineyard, teaching us that God’s generosity is not measured by human standards. The workers who laboured all day were unhappy when those who worked only one hour received the same reward. Their complaint reveals how easily comparison and jealousy can enter our hearts.
God does not give according to what we think people deserve. He gives generously because He is loving and merciful. We are invited to rejoice in the blessings others receive rather than compare them with our own.
Let us ask God to free us from envy and selfishness, and help us recognise His goodness in our lives and in the lives of others.
