Week beginning: 23rd August, 2026.

When asked who His disciples think He is, Simon Peter speaks up with conviction, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God”. We are told God, not human knowledge, is the source of this REVELATION: Peter’s response introduces us to a truth that requires a profound, a living trust that shows itself through prayer, obedience, and changed behaviour: FAITH.

Jesus goes on to reveal two truths about the Church: “You are Peter, and on this rock, I will build My church.” Just as Jesus is both divine and human (the mystery of the Incarnation), so the Church is also both a human and divine institution, founded by Christ Himself; and “The gates of hell shall not prevail against it”.

The Church will triumph over evil, evil cannot destroy it, although its human nature may often be subject to weakness, sin, temptation. Focusing on these shortcomings is only one side of the coin. When we believe in the divine aspect of the Church, as a revelation from God, we become united in its divine mission of salvation.

Jesus asks US who we think He is. Who is Jesus for ME? How does He figure in MY life? How much do I think about Him in MY daily life? May each of us respond in the silence of our hearts, knowing our task is to live according to how we answer, for the glory of God.
