Week beginning: 26th July, 2026.
Today’s Gospel presents us with three parables: using the images of hidden treasure and a pearl of great price, the first two are addressed to individuals who, with joy and assurance, sell everything to possess something precious. So, to know God through Jesus, and to live according to the Gospel, are the most precious things in life.
Through Jesus and the Gospel, we come to understand the real meaning of life and know what the most important things in life are. The third parable, of the net thrown into the sea, focuses on the ultimate judgement, the realistic situation about the Christian sense of time and the separation process at the end of time; it helps us to understand the Church better and the way she exists.
Here, Jesus compares the Church to a fishing net which, when thrown into the lake, collects all sorts of fish. The net does not discriminate. It was left to the fishermen to do the dividing and the separating process.
While the first and second parables speak of the total commitment and dedication, which are the ideal of every follower of Christ, the third parable reminds us that the Church and the Kingdom, in the process of their evolution, are full of all kinds of people, both saints and sinners. Those who have heard the teachings of Jesus, and put them into practice, will enter the kingdom of heaven and those who do not will be put aside.
God is a JUST Judge. Judgment is for later. Right now, we are called to use the time given to us to go in search of the important things, in order to be able to identify, with Jesus, the really True, the Good and the Beautiful, and help others too in the same search.
