Week beginning: 25th January, 2026.

The third Sunday in Ordinary time is known as the Sunday of the Word of God. This was decreed by the Church to encourage God’s people to get familiar with the Scriptures, with God’s Word.

Today’s Gospel resumes the passage of Isaiah in the first reading to show the fulfilment of that prophesy in the person of Jesus. It is Jesus Christ, our Lord, who is true light that comes to save us; it is Jesus Christ who is the Eternal King; it is Jesus Christ, our Lord, who is the real Prince of peace.

The Gospel describes, then, the beginning of Jesus Christ’s ministry, a beginning that marks the continuity of the ministry of John the Baptist, who had just been arrested by Herod. Like John the Baptist, Jesus Christ also comes to preach conversion in the face of the imminence of God’s Kingdom.

In light of this Sunday’s readings, let us ask the Lord for the grace to devote ourselves to the reading of the Word of God and to be, in our turn, witnesses and messengers who bring about God’s reign in this world.
