Week beginning: 26th October, 2025

In the Gospel this weekend, Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee boasts of his religious observance, while the tax collector humbly prays, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” Jesus’ message is clear: God values humility over self-righteousness.

This parable challenges us to examine our hearts. Do we approach God with pride in our own deeds, or with honest recognition of our need for mercy? The Pharisee trusts in himself, while the tax collector trusts in God’s compassion. True righteousness comes not from comparing ourselves to others, but from a sincere relationship with God rooted in humility.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be honest about our weaknesses and open to God’s grace. “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
