Week beginning: 19th January, 2025

‘This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.’ John 2:11

John calls the first miracle of Jesus at Cana a ‘sign. Normally, a sign points to something. This sign at Cana points to Jesus as the Son of God, so that we believe in Him and that by believing, we might have life in His name. Jesus knew that His time had not yet come because once He began His ministry it would be the first step on the road to Calvary. But He stepped up to save the wedding family from impending embarrassment.

Jesus cares for us, and He takes care of our needs both great and small. He uses the stuff of everyday life to accomplish the extraordinary. How many times do we run out of wine – the wine of joy, peace, and security – and life leaves us empty? But we have Jesus always at our side, who can turn our sadness into gladness, our frowns into smiles and our whimpers of fear into songs of hope.

He will do everything for us, provided we follow the advice of Mary: “Do whatever he tells you”.
